A quick look at one of the latest stories on the Seibertron forum makes distasteful reading. Ryan is basically boasting about getting some massive box of TF toys from Hasbro. Apparently TFW2005 and Tformers have recieved similar "gifts". Whye would Hasbro just send out gift-boxes out of the goodness of their hearts? It's no surprise that Seibs and TFW have being clamping down more on anti-movie talk in their forums, being super-positive about the Bayformers and getting exclusive toys and images. Ryan was very anti-movie and then suddenly changed his tune, I wonder why?

Disgusting. Sell-outs.

It looks like that story a while ago about Paramount pulling out all the stops to quash the negativity online was true.

It's no secret that large companies astroturf and employ viral marketing techniques. It's in vogue now.

I mean, it's totally possible that those TF sites are genuinely stoked about the movie. But Hasbro does seem to be pulling out all the stops to ensure good fan relations. And why wouldn't they? There's hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, afterall.

That being said, I complained a lot last year and still wound up having to pay for my kid's Optimash Prime. Hrmph! Laughing

EDIT: Ironically enough, looking over the comments just now, Seibertron's response was the first and in 100% agreement with the author.

You know, I'm sure you wouldn't even think this topic up if you were entirely happy with the movie direction. But because you hate it, it must be no integrity evil Paramount PLANTSSS out to control the internet.... Rolling Eyes

I've read that a few people out there were questioning if Hasbro/Paramount/Dreamworks "bought out" some of the outspoken people such as myself who attended this event. If getting to see a sneak peak of the movie so that I can share my thoughts with all of the fans of my website constitutes as being "bought out", then that's what happened. I think their main objective was to give some key people in the Transformers hobby a taste of what Hasbro/Paramount/Dreamworks have been seeing so that we could share that with you. It's a little different to hear the opinion of a die-hard fan like myself and not from someone who's officially involved with the movie. I saw it. I got it. It's going to be a spectacular summer blockbuster that most of us should enjoy. Ben Yee (bwtf.com), Kevin Lukis (unicron.com), Jason Lukis (unicron.com), Rick Alvarez (Transformers Collector's Club, etc), Tony Bacala (tfw2005.com) and myself all seemed to genuinely enjoy the movie.

Seems he knew when writing that review that some folks would suspect a buy off, eh?

To be completely fair, Paramount/Viacom/MTV is known in some marketing circles as being master viral marketers. No crime in that -- as a cold-blooded capitalist, you use whatever means are at your disposal to guarantee a healthy return on investment.

The Hasbro/fan site relationship is symbiotic. Fan sites don't want to piss Hasbro off -- they're essentially giant portals of copyright infringement left to slide because it benefits Hasbro (re: free advertising.) Hasbro, on the other hand, knows which side its bread is buttered on and wants to keep relations good with these fans.

That could be the problem there, the fact that they just seem to have been converted completely without any reservations it would seem, or they really could have been blown away by what they seen only people that know for sure are the people themsleves.

You think Paramount sent out expensive gift-packs and free special screenings out of the goodness of their hearts Mr. Sector 7?

The hell I do. They sent them to the owners of most, if not all the major TF sites. Why? Build brand loyalty promote awareness, ect. Duh.

Now. once again, would you even consider reporting this if the movie was exactly to your standards if you wanted to be? Tony and Seibs were die-hard haters, The film itself proved them wrong, and nothing else. Even if Seibs and Tony had gone on saying 'Yeah, everything I thought was wrong with the film still is', they probably still would have gotten these boxes, yasee?

It's called 'Hasbro knows that being nice builds loyalty, so they're being nice'. There is nothing unethical or subversive going on here except in your own mind.

-edit-
PS: You're not seriously gonna start throwing 'Sector 7' at me to accuse me of being a plant, are you?

"Building loyalty" is just another way of saying "paid off" surely? Why should anyone be "loyal"? Surely honest opinions, not writing nice things to get free toys is the way to go? Amazing that you can't see the connection between certain events and the changes of heart. Seibertron was posting on blogs savaging a TF designers who was posting in there for example..he just happened to do a 180 because...?

Rolling Eyes Go give Elvis a hug for me when you see Jimmy Hoffa and him in the Loch Ness Monsters underwater UFO emporium (featuring Amelia Earhards airplane).

They did a 180 because they really liked what they saw. They got those boxes because they run the top TF sites on the web. Geesh.

I said the same thing when Ryan did the 180 degrees after receiving all the free booty and getting a special invite to a preview screening of the TF movie. Smells very fishy you have to admit. People become very humble after being showered with gifts.

Can it be that good? To me they cannabalized the Transformers mythos and have stayed true to only the basic elements of what made it so special. I'm seeing the trailer and advance showing of some scenes from the movie and I'm not sold yet. Yes the action looks good, but the robots still stink.

I'll come back to this site after veiwing the movie and I'll give an honest assesment of what I think. I don't hate the movie,...yet. I just don't like the direction its going. Its getting closer now (less than a month.) and for being a die-hard TF fan, I'm not as excited about it as I thought I would be. Two decades later and very disappointed.
