Sweet Jebus Allmighty. You cannot tell me that they failed to capture Transformers spirit. Amazing.

Sure I can. Laughing

But it looks like a dandy alien invasion movie ala Bay. Nice action, for sure, but it still doesn't "feel" like Transformers to me -- just Giant F'n Robots -- sorry.

Big splash on MTV = viral marketing. Paramount and MTV are both owned by Viacom, so it's only natural. Kind of like how Disney pimps its own flicks ad nauseum on Disney Channel and ABC.

Looks like big robots fighting to me. Yes, it looks very nice, but it does not capture the Transformers feeling or look (in any way).

Oh, and Optimus's face is still horrible.

(I did like Cullen's voice though, sounded better here)

While I'm no supporter of the movie, I have never disagreed with the notion the FX would be great until last night.

I was watching the awards with my roomate, and when we saw the Prime fighting clip we were both very dissapointed. It just didn't look right at all to me. It almost seemed too "plastic-y" and the way the individual pieces that were hanging off were animated just seemed off. I know there's always the argument that because it's a non-plausible character in the real world that your brain won't completely accept it. I don't think that's the case here. Mt design opinion aside, I do not like how they (TF's) look when animated at all.

Also finally seeing the Prime's mouth in motion (and at a decent size) I definately wish they would've kept the face plate up.

Bah. I give. I'll never get you guys to like it. Sad

(Is still sure it will be vindicated ala BW).

Yeah, that I figured. Still great that it's getting massive exposure like this.

Really? I thought they looked great. There was one brief moment that looked a little shakey, but that's true with all CG regardless. I don't think anybody will notice in theater.

I think the animation is a bit too fluid and non-mechanical. I was also a bit perturbed by the morphing Transformations (see Ironhide when he dives into his vehicle mode, it looks weird and bit cheap IMO).

After seeing the 2nd trailer, I was fairly impressed with th CG/Animation (It's ILM though, and should be expected), but there were some parts in the Prime fight that stood out. It felt like I was watching minatures and not CG.

The one thing that comes to mind that might be my problem is that with the Prime stuff we saw last night. There seemed to be so many parts not anchored down. There was alot of little things flapping and moving. None of the parts seemed to have any substantial weight to them. I keep thinking of the way the shoulder pads move on Stormtroopers (in the old SW movies). There was alot of flopping, I would think there would be more crashing with these parts, they just seemed to float about.

Also the parts of the windows/grill in Prime's chest seemed to contort (I'm sure they didn't but...) and sit at very awkward angles when he was moving. Perhaps I'm looking at it too much like muscle. But I still think that perhaps there should be more restriction with what they are able to do as far as range of movement goes.

Another gripe I had was with one of the BB transformations. Where the entire front of the car just seemed to fold in on itself and go nowhere, almost dissapearing. The only reason I mention this (dead horse) was the notion that the transformations were supposed to be as close to perfect as possible. I definately saw alot of cheating.

and Prime's face. It was just awkward, there wasn't much expression and the almost lack of a nose (I know he has one, but it just looks silly to me). The seperate plates on the face were imobile which just makes me wonder why have them at all, they could have easily gone with a solid one piece, or kept the face plate up. Also the bloom lighting on his face was just awkward and seemed too CG and took me out of the scene.

Hope that explains it Fwiffs'. As for the hopefullness of it following in BW's footsteps. I'm not a BW's fan, too campy. But I'll still see the movie and watch objectively, unfortunately I hate action flicks, so it doesn't bode well.

The problem with banking on CGI effects to sell a movie -- any movie -- is that so much has been done already it's hard for anything to really take your breath away, you know?

I'm quite disappointed the way poisoncow is in that the transformations for me lack punch, weight and credibility. The vehicles seem to dissolve into the bot modes, which is quite unsatisfying.

Do you seriously think a more G1 (simpler, blocky) look would make the transformations look better?

Agreed. 10-15 years ago this wasn't the case, but now it's common place and good CG/Effects are expected. If a story can't hold the picture together then the FX won't make it good (I would think, but some people just like eye candy)

I wasn't impressed by the clips. Its okay I guess. Just doesn't envoke the Transformers I know. Crying or Very sad

It was shameless how Transformers won 'Most anticipated movie coming out this summer.' Was there any doubt that it wasn't going to win? Everything about the awards show had a subtle robot feel to it. The transforming dog that Sarah rode in on, the transforming best (insert here) catagory, MTV 2007 awards icon transforming, etc.

By the way, Sarah Silverman was totally unfunny. So was Dane Cook. I hate both those comedians. Their jokes are dumb. No one was really laughing. Sounded more like they where trying to laugh. Big applause & laugh signs where probably going off. Everyone clap now. Very drool.

Sarah after Rhianna's song performance of her hit Umbrella. "I wouldn't want to sing that song indoors." Smile Confused Sad Sad Rolling Eyes "Rhianna's mother is named Umbrella. Huh? Absolutely the worst MTV awards show ever!

I noticed the more subtle references as well. My roomate and I were discussing how this (TF) movie is being "whored" out more than any movie we could recall. I can't turn anywhere without seeing TF's. The movie awards were ridiculous as far as TF's went, and if the category for "best Summer movie you haven't seen" wasn't a studio throwing money around, I don't know what is (Unless this has been an award before).

Even without the merchandise though, this movie is everywhere. If it wasn't TF's and hadn't promised people I'd go, I wouldn't at this point. Not because of my apprehension over what I've seen. But because I'm sick of seeing and hearing about it (though I'm on a TF board right now). I didn't see Spidey 3 or Pirates (2 or 3) because of all the hype, TF's now feels the same

It has.

Wait... That makes absolutely no sense to me. You would have prefered it if TF was some little movie getting released with little-to-no merchandise? The only way it WOULDN'T get 'whored out' like this if it was, well, *not* a big budget action movie.

And this movie is no-where near as 'whored-out' as, I dunno, Spiderman, Star Wars, and any other mega-hit I can think of.

I swear, we're at the point now where you guys are desperately reaching for things to hate.

Compare that to the quick shot of Jazz doing a similar spin-transform in the MTV clip barrage (the first clip in the link I gave). Does the transformation *really* look more visually impressive?

To be fair to both, I think what people prefer as far as transformations goes depends on how the aesthetics of the bots rub you. The movie bots couldn't transform like a G1 bot and vice versa.

I think what most traditionalists (see i didn't say Gee-Wunners) find appealing about the older transformation is it's plausible to follow the transformation. Like a puzzle they're (myself included) able to deicpher and figure out either just visually or represented in toy form. The movie transformations seem almost too complicated at times (not saying bad, just not my cup of tea)

With that said, I'll say what I always say, The movie bots aren't too far away from the point where some minor-major design choices/changes could have been made to compromise a more traditional aesthetic while creating a new and very different bot. I still think prime isn't so bad (although he's the only I like), and if he had just a few changes I could love him as much as a G1,RID or Cybertron Prime. It was a fine line to walk, and I think Bay and Company were poor tightrope walkers.

Maybe not, but I can easily tell it's a Transformer (it's got the design aesthetic) and, like 'Cow said, can follow the transformation.

I don't want 100% G1 in live-action... but I was hoping for more recognizability, at least. A much better balance could've been struck, IMHO.

Am I the only person on Earth who saw the concepts and started working out the transformations there? I can follow them - it takes more effort, but it's doable. I figured out Blackout, Starscreams and Primes transformations relatively easily, and if I wanted to, I could work out everybodies (save Megatrons, who's a special case). I haven't had any trouble following any of the transformations - it's just the same thing we've always done, except bumped up about 8 levels of complexity.

I could agree there. A white ratchet with the crest, Ironhide with a mohawk, ect (ok, pretty much more like movie Jazz) would make it an easier transition for the fans.

No person can work out Frenzy's transformation.

Wait - I think it's something like this:

*rattles some cutlery in a box*

But less impressive.
